When the Spanish first arrived in Florida in 1513, the encountered several sophisticated indigenous tribes in Florida, with the Timucua, Calusa, and Apalachee being among the most prominent. The Calusa were particularly noteworthy for their complex society centered around the southern Gulf Coast, where they built impressive canal systems and artificial islands using shells and clay. They were skilled sailors and fishermen who resisted Spanish attempts at colonization and conversion to Christianity, maintaining their traditional religious practices and political structure longer than many other Florida tribes.
All 2 Florida Goldback Gold Notes are available with a protective plastic sleeve. This new denomination in the series features the same quality design and production, with thin layers of 24-karat gold combined between layers of durable polymer to create the note.
