Goldbacks debuted with the release of Utah Goldbacks, offering Americans the first form of spendable gold in nearly a century.

Goldbacks are designed with 24-karat gold and feature unique designs for each denomination honoring the heritage of the state for which each series is issued.

Florida is the latest state to have a Goldback Series, and it marks the debut of new denominations in the form of 1/2, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 Goldbacks.

The design of the 1 Florida Goldback Gold Note celebrates the spirit of discovery that lead to the Spanish establishing one of the first permanent European settlements in North America. The design here shows a woman in the foreground playing a stringed instrument with flamingos visible just behind her. The background is dominated by a Spanish-built coastal fortification and a Spanish galleon out at sea.

The Spanish discovery and settlement of Florida began in 1513 when Juan Ponce de León first explored the peninsula, allegedly searching for the Fountain of Youth. Spain established its first successful settlement at St. Augustine in 1565 under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, making it the oldest continuously inhabited European-established city in the continental United States. St. Augustine served as a strategic military outpost and missionary center, allowing Spain to protect its treasure fleets along the Florida coast.
