Goldbacks debuted with the release of Utah Goldbacks, offering Americans the first form of spendable gold in nearly a century.

Goldbacks are designed with 24-karat gold and feature unique designs for each denomination honoring the heritage of the state for which each series is issued.

Florida is the latest state to have a Goldback Series, and it marks the debut of new denominations in the form of 1/2, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 Goldbacks.

In the design of the 50 Florida Goldback Gold Note, Florida’s role in World War II aviation is celebrated. The design shows a female aviator in the cockpit while several additional aircraft fly in formation overhead. The underbelly of the closest plane features the phrase AMOR PATRIAE, while an additional phrase of BE WATCHFUL, STAND FIRM is noted at the bottom. Amor patriae translates as love of one’s country or patriotism.

Florida played a vital role in World War II aviation training, with dozens of airfields established across the state to take advantage of the year-round flying weather and vast open spaces. Notable bases included Pensacola Naval Air Station, which trained thousands of naval aviators, and Riddle Field in Clewiston, where British Royal Air Force cadets learned to fly. The state’s strategic location also made it crucial for anti-submarine patrols along the Atlantic coast and Gulf of Mexico, where German U-boats threatened shipping lanes.
